Pike's Peak, CO

Yesterday Greg and I chugged to the top of Pike’s Peak (14,110 ft) on the world’s longest and highest cog railway. Last time I went to the peak (1994), I hiked to the summit. This time the journey was much easier—I sat on a train and watched the scenery roll by while I munched on hummus and crackers.

Dusted with snow, the mountains were mesmerizing. On such a cold day, the famous Pike’s Peak doughnuts were a treat at the peak. (As you know, any calories consumed over 10,000 ft don’t count!)

Katharine Lee Bates traveled to the summit of Pike’s Peak in 1893 in a wagon. Awestruck by the beauty, Bates wrote a poem that is sung today all across the USA: "America the Beautiful."

On the way down, we saw a magestic rocky mountain bighorn sheep. It’s hard to photograph a moving animal from a moving train, but I think I did a pretty darn good job…if you look closely, you’ll see that the sheep is smiling.
